PLC

Professional Learning Community

Professional Learning Community or PLC was first established in the late 1990s by the private sector of education in the United States, in which academic scholars adapted the concepts from learning theories to implement as organizational management.

It is believed that working as a team with coordinated cooperation will lead to increased academic productivity.
By looking at the learning culture of the PLC, teachers and their peers play a key role in determining the success of teaching management and development, as well as creating better results for students.

The PLC essentially helps motivate teachers to follow up on how students learn and build up their knowledge. The PLC also ensures continuous evaluation and knowledge exchange on learning management between teachers.

The Chevron Enjoy Science Phase II brings in the Professional Learning Community as an important approach for raising the academic quality of schools participating in Thailand School Improvement Program (TSIP) through the following processes.

,,
1

Train teachers the techniques to conduct effective PLC through the TrainFlix online platform.

Teaching Media
Teachers
Students

PLC implementation shall focus on 3 main elements: teaching media, teachers, and students. Moreover, Inquiry-Based Learning approach shall be applied to improve the teaching process and to encourage engagement, knowledge exchange, and sharing of constructive feedbacks among educators, all of which are critical for enhancing instructional practices in the classroom.

2

Establish PLC networks that emphasizes an Open Classroom approach.

This is done in order for teachers to discuss together the observed learning outcomes of students, set goals for lesson improvement, cooperatively plan lessons, and visit each other’s classrooms, all for the purpose of improving classroom effectiveness. The PLC shall also promote continuous improvement of learning and teaching processes by focusing on 5 important steps.

Project Implementation

1

Study

Teachers and educators shall examine the curriculum, content, indicators, standards, lesson plans as well as students’ progress and readiness. They can determine short-term and long-term goals in learning and teaching management for improving students learning outcome.

2

Plan

Groups of teachers and educators shall plan the units of study, create joint lesson structure, and predict what students will learn from the designed lesson plan. Next, they shall predict the students’ answers and understanding, design engaging assignments and plan data collection from assignments assessment.

3

Teach the Lesson / Conduct Class Observation

A teacher shall implement the lesson in a real classroom setting, according to the lesson plan while the rest of the PLC members will cooperatively collect data as they observe the classroom and the student engagement.

4

Reflect

Teachers and educators shall reflect on the data obtained from classroom observation, in which there are 4 main questions that must be answered. Q1. Based on classroom observation, how did the lesson impact students’ learning? Q2. Did the lesson on this particular subject/unit resulted in learning that will be built upon in the next learning segment? Q3. What are some shared lessons learned that should continue to be practiced? Q4. How will educators adjust their teaching plans and work assignments?
